Sign of the Day: one new ASL sign, every day

A Deaf signer signs HELLO in ASL

Sign of the Day is a daily series from AISA School. Each day we post one short video of an ASL sign on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube, signed by a Deaf, fluent signer. Every sign in the series also has its own page on this site, so you can come back to it whenever you want to look it up.

What a week looks like

From Monday to Friday there is one sign on the week's theme. Saturday is a guess-the-sign game: you watch the sign, pick A, B or C and comment your answer. Sunday is a pack that brings the week's signs together in one video, so you can see them side by side and check which ones stuck.

The first signs

Week 1 was greetings: hello, thank you, I love you, please and bye, followed by a pack of those first five signs. Week 2 is family, starting with mom. Each week gets a theme so the signs you learn belong together, which makes them easier to remember and easier to use in a real conversation.

A page for every sign

Every sign has a page with the video, a short answer at the top, and steps for the handshape, the location, the movement and the palm orientation. You also get an example sentence and a note on other ways Deaf signers may make the same sign. The wording is written from the video and checked against ASL references such as Lifeprint and Handspeak. Start with hello, thank you or mom, or browse the whole ASL sign library.

Practice what you learn

Watching a sign is the first step. Signing it yourself is the second. In AISA School you can practice with your phone's camera and get instant feedback on your signing, then move on to the next sign when you are ready.

If you have a sign you want to see in the series, tell us in the comments on any Sign of the Day post.
