ASL Numbers Signs: Learn Them With Video
Numbers come up in almost every conversation: ages, times, prices, phone numbers and how many of something you have. This group covers the numbers 1 to 9 in ASL, each with a short looping video by a Deaf, fluent ASL signer.
All nine are one-hand signs held still beside the shoulder, so the handshape carries the meaning. From 1 to 5 you add fingers: the index finger for 1, then the middle finger for 2, the thumb joins for 3, four fingers with the thumb tucked in for 4, and an open hand for 5. From 6 to 9 the thumb touches one fingertip while the others stay up: the little finger for 6, the ring finger for 7, the middle finger for 8 and the index finger for 9. In these videos every number is signed with the palm facing forward; on their own, 1 to 5 are often signed with the palm facing back, and both are used. This group follows the Numbers category in the AISA School app.
Learn 1 to 5 first, then 6 to 9, then count up and down without stopping. When you are ready, practice in AISA School with your camera and get instant feedback on your signing.
