How to Sign “Funny” in ASL

To sign funny in ASL, extend your index and middle fingers together and bring the fingertips to the tip of your nose. Brush the fingers down off the nose as they bend, then repeat, so the sign has two short strokes. Scrunch your face a little, as if something made you laugh.

How to sign it

  1. Handshape: the index and middle fingers extended together, the other fingers closed.

  2. Location: the tip of the nose.

  3. Movement: brush the fingers down off the nose as they bend, twice.

  4. Facial expression: a scrunched, amused face.

Tip to remember it

Lifeprint notes the difference between fun and funny: funny uses one hand and a double movement, while fun uses two hands and a quick single movement.

Use it in a sentence

DAD FUNNY.

Dad is funny.

This video matches Lifeprint: an H hand brushes off the nose twice. Lifeprint adds that the fingers do not have to touch the nose.
