How to Sign “Giraffe” in ASL

To sign giraffe in ASL, curve your dominant hand into a C shape and place it at the base of your neck, palm toward you. Slide it up your neck to just under your chin while your chin lifts a little. The hand traces the giraffe's long neck.

How to sign it

  1. Handshape: curve your dominant hand into a C, thumb and fingers apart.

  2. Location: start at the base of your neck, with the hand around the front of the throat.

  3. Movement: slide the hand up the neck until it reaches the underside of your chin.

  4. Palm orientation: the palm faces your neck the whole time.

  5. Facial expression: lift your chin slightly as the hand moves up.

Tip to remember it

The upward slide shows the giraffe’s long neck, which is why the sign starts low on the throat.
