How to Sign “Dog” in ASL

To sign dog in ASL, hold your dominant hand in front of your chest with the palm facing you. Snap the middle finger against the thumb, then repeat the snap a few times while the hand stays in place. The snap is the whole sign, like snapping to get a dog's attention.

How to sign it

  1. Handshape: the middle finger rests on the thumb, ready to snap.

  2. Location: in front of the chest on the same side.

  3. Movement: snap the middle finger off the thumb a few times.

  4. Palm orientation: the palm faces you.

Tip to remember it

Lifeprint says the snap uses the middle finger, not the index finger.

Use it in a sentence

DOG CUTE.

The dog is cute.

This video snaps several times. Lifeprint snaps twice and lists other versions: patting the leg and then snapping, or patting the leg twice.
